The room with the jokes in

Kelpman,
unabridged.

On the rocks at sunset in a beaded hat and jewelled sunglasses, one finger touching the setting sun
2 September 2026 · putting the sun out
Black t-shirt and reading glasses, no costume at all, holding blades of kelp up on either side
1 September 2026 · the same man, ten minutes earlier

You've read the serious bit. There's one rule, the water is twelve degrees, and somebody will stand next to you.

This page is the rest of it. Nobody swims in the hat. The hat is for the walk there, the queue for coffee, and the ten minutes on the rocks when everybody is deciding whether they're actually going in.

Contains one grown man in sunglasses

The costume, honestly

It's not a plant.
It's an algae.

Holding long blades of kelp overhead like a wig, in an orange hat and jewelled sunglasses
1 September 2026 · a bathroom, obviously
Underwater in a dive mask, face close to the lens, sunlight above
1 January 2023 · under it, rather than wearing it

There is always a pile of it on the rocks after a swell. Somebody put a length of it on their head, and that is the entire origin of everything on this website.

It costs nothing, it's free on the rocks, and it comes off in the sea — where you can go and look at it growing, which is the other half of the argument. The best costume in Cape Town washes up twice a day.

No roots, no flowers, no plant. It's an algae — it grips the rock with a thing called a holdfast and feeds off the whole of itself at once. Somebody at the rock will tell you this within about a month of joining.

The orange hat came later. The sunglasses were a mistake I decided to keep.

Sea Point, from the rocks

On the rocks with Lion's Head and the Sea Point skyline behind, arms wide, mouth open
3 September 2026 · Lion's Head doing the heavy lifting

Two years of this and the mountain has never once complained.

The kelp shower

I brought it
home with me.

In an orange hat, sequinned jacket and a mask of kelp blades across the face, one hand raised
5 September 2026 · a bathroom in Sea Point

The kelp comes off in the sea, mostly. What doesn't come off in the sea comes off in the shower, and one evening it stayed on.

This is the direction the whole character is drifting in. Less disco ball, more thing that came out of the sea and learned to wave.

Nobody has explained the footage to the landlord.

Where the hat actually goes

Mostly nowhere
near the sea.

Most of this klub met the hat on a pavement, in a queue, at somebody's party. The swimming is about an hour a day. The rest of it is this.

a Tuesday, a pavement, a flower nobody asked for
Walking down the street in full sequins holding a takeaway coffee, a dairy truck passing behind
coffee, 08:32, a Monday
In a dark cafe, pointing at a Death Before Decaf mural on the wall
pointing at the only rule that outranks ours
Wheeling a bicycle along a city pavement in a long yellow robe with kelp draped over both shoulders
taking the bicycle out, 8 September
Balanced on one leg in a yoga pose on the grass beside a vlei, in shorts and bright pink shoes with a pink feather boa trailing
and this, which nobody has explained
The orange hat in mid-air, thrown, against a blue sky
the hat, briefly airborne
Hat off, one arm flung out, bright blue sky behind
his own favourite
Bathroom, no jacket, the orange hat coming down onto the head
getting dressed, badly
In a nightclub, close, under purple light, sequins catching it
a club, near midnight
A vast sky with a bright break in the cloud over dark rocks and sea, one tiny distant figure standing on the rocks
and the actual point of it

The good ones with other people in them are not here. They're the best photographs of the lot and they stay off a public page until the people in them have said yes.

Golden hour, no face required

Holding the sun
like a small pet.

Silhouetted on the rocks with the setting sun held between two cupped hands
2 September 2026 · the sun, held
The sun sitting on the horizon over the sea, a boat on it, nobody in the frame
9 June 2024 · the sun, unattended
Standing beside the tidal pool at dusk with both arms up, the water dead flat
15 February 2026 · arms up, nobody watching, still doing it
Several people standing on the rocks at sunset, silhouetted, spread out
30 August 2026 · other people, entirely unprompted, doing the same thing

Every photograph on this page was taken by the person in it, at arm's length, badly.

The shower ones are stills off a video, which is worse. There is no photographer, there has never been a photographer, and the day there is one this will all look completely different.

Questions the costume raises

Yes.
All of them.

Do I have to dress up?
God no. One person does. That's enough.
Do you swim in that?
Never. It's a walking-there hat.
Where does the kelp come from?
The rocks. It's free. It's right there.
Isn't this embarrassing?
Deeply. That's the service.
Why do it, then?
So nobody else has to be the odd one.
Can I take a photo?
You'd be the first to ask.

One entirely made-up photograph

The bath,
as it felt.

A bathtub full of kelp, jewelled sunglasses, a kelp stem held like a pipe — with an ocean sunset, leaping dolphins and a breaching whale composited in behind it
Everything else on this page happened. This did not — the tub, the kelp, the glasses and the stem are real, the entire Atlantic behind them is not. It is roughly what a bath with half a kelp forest in it feels like from the inside.

That's the lot

Right.
Get in the sea.

The jokes are the door handle. The water is the door. Twelve degrees, sunrise and sunset, and a towel is the whole kit list.
